Ohio: Buckeyes
History: This plate is name after the Ohio buckeye tree’s nut. Buckeye are a popular candy made from sweet peanut butter filling which is dipped in chocolate resembling the nut. This food became popular among Ohia’s especially during Ohio State University games and holidays.
Symbolism: This food symbolizes Ohio’s pride linked to Ohio State University and the buckeye state’s identity.

Ingredients
For the Filling:
- 1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3-4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
For the Coating:
- 2 cups semisweet or milk chocolate chips
- 1 tbsp vegetable shortening (optional, for smoother coating)


1. Prepare the Peanut Butter Mixture
- In a large mixing bowl, beat together the peanut butter, butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition, until the mixture forms a stiff dough.
- Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
2. Melt the Chocolate
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and shortening (if using).
- Microwave in 20-30 second intervals, stirring after each, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
3. Dip the Buckeyes
- Remove the chilled peanut butter balls from the refrigerator.
- Insert a toothpick into the top of each ball, then dip it into the melted chocolate, leaving a small circle of peanut butter visible on top.
- Allow any excess chocolate to drip off, then place the dipped buckeye back onto the lined baking sheet. Remove the toothpick and gently smooth over the hole with your finger if desired.
4. Set and Serve
- Refrigerate the dipped buckeyes until the chocolate is firm, about 30 minutes.
- Once set, transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
